Renting in Den Haag
The Hague is home to the Dutch government, dozens of embassies and organisations such as the International Criminal Court and Europol, which makes it one of the most international rental markets in the country. Many expats settle in the Statenkwartier, Archipelbuurt and Benoordenhout: leafy areas with large townhouses, close to the World Forum and several international schools.
Younger professionals often prefer the Zeeheldenkwartier or Regentessekwartier, with independent shops and cafés a short cycle from both the centre and the beach. Scheveningen offers sea views, but can feel busy in summer. Furnished apartments on fixed-term arrangements are common, because many people come for a posting of a few years.
Be aware of the housing permit (huisvestingsvergunning): for cheaper homes the municipality checks your household and income before you can move in. Family homes near the international schools attract strong competition, especially in the months before the school year starts.
Tip: many landlords in The Hague work with letting agents. If your employer offers a relocation budget, use it, but remember that an agent who acts for the landlord is not allowed to charge you fees for the same home.

The Statenkwartier and Archipelbuurt are within walking or cycling distance of the World Forum, Europol, the OPCW and the Peace Palace. The International Criminal Court is near the dunes on the edge of Scheveningen. Benoordenhout is convenient for the ministries near Den Haag Centraal and for the motorway towards Amsterdam and Utrecht.
What is a housing permit and when do I need one?
In The Hague a housing permit (huisvestingsvergunning) is required for social housing and some lower-priced private rentals. The municipality checks income and household size. Most expat apartments above that rent level do not need one, but always ask the landlord, because moving in without a required permit can lead to a fine.
Is a temporary contract normal in The Hague?
Less than it used to be. Since July 2024 most new rental contracts in the Netherlands are for an indefinite period. Fixed terms are only allowed in specific cases, such as a diplomatic clause when the landlord lives abroad temporarily, or for students. Read that clause carefully and ask what happens if your posting is extended.

Does my pass renew automatically?
No. You pay once for a fixed period. On the end date your pass stops by itself and you get a message telling you it has ended. There is no direct debit and nothing to cancel.
How fast do I get an alert?
Listings are refreshed several times an hour. If a new home matches your search profile, it is on your phone within minutes. With the Week Pass you get an email every hour; from the Month Pass onwards it goes by WhatsApp.
Where do I respond to a home?
Directly to the landlord or agent. You get the full address, a reply text that is ready and your tenant file as a PDF. We are not an agency and we charge no agency fees.
What is the 48-hour rule?
Homes that have been online for more than 48 hours are fully visible to everyone, pass or no pass. The pass gives you the head start in those first two days, plus the help with responding.
What does a pass cost?
The Week Pass costs € 9.95 for 7 days, the Month Pass € 29.95 for 30 days and the Until You Find Pass € 49.95 for 60 days. You pay once. There is never a second charge.
Can I look around for free first?
Yes. Searching, filtering and viewing photos is always free. On new homes you see the rent, the neighbourhood and the features; the full address and responding come with a pass, or on their own after 48 hours.
How do I pay?
With iDEAL or PayPal. Your pass is active right after payment and you get an invoice by email. There is no direct debit.
Do I need a password?
No. You log in with your phone number: you get a code by WhatsApp or text message. No password to remember, nothing to forget.
What is in my tenant file?
You fill in your details once: income, work, household and motivation. We turn that into a tidy PDF that you send with every response. Exactly what landlords and agents want to see.
What if I find nothing within 60 days?
With the Until You Find Pass we then extend your pass free of charge in periods of 30 days, until you have a home, up to a maximum of 6 months after purchase. Are the homes I see genuine?
Every home is checked daily to see whether it is still available. Rented homes disappear from your list, and we watch every listing for scam signals. The absence of a signal does not mean a listing is safe: never pay anything up front.
Can I search several cities at once?
Yes. With the Week Pass you have one search profile; from the Month Pass onwards you have three at once. Each profile has its own city, budget and number of rooms.
